Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Taiwan Fertilizer Company (TFC) have announced a strategic partnership to explore the development of a fuel ammonia value chain in Taiwan. The collaboration aims to support Taiwan’s ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Under the terms of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), MHI and TFC will jointly conduct a pre-feasibility study to assess the technical and economic viability of establishing an ammonia value chain in Taiwan. This includes evaluating the infrastructure required for ammonia receiving, storage, handling, and delivery to power plants. The study will also explore the potential of using ammonia as a fuel for power generation.
Ammonia, a compound of hydrogen and nitrogen, is gaining traction as a clean energy carrier due to its high energy density and carbon-free combustion properties. By developing a robust ammonia value chain, Taiwan can reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and accelerate its transition to a low-carbon economy.
The partnership between MHI and TFC brings together two industry leaders with complementary expertise. MHI’s extensive experience in energy and infrastructure projects, combined with TFC’s knowledge of the Taiwanese market and ammonia production, positions the collaboration as a key driver for the development of a hydrogen and ammonia economy in the region.
The joint study marks a significant step forward in Taiwan’s efforts to achieve its net-zero emissions target. By exploring the potential of ammonia as a clean fuel, the partnership between MHI and TFC could pave the way for a more sustainable energy future.
