Johnson Controls–Hitachi and Elsewedy Machinery to Deliver Egypt’s Largest VRF System for High-Speed Rail Project

In a landmark move toward sustainable infrastructure, Johnson Controls–Hitachi Air Conditioning MEA, in partnership with Elsewedy Machinery, has secured the contract to deliver the largest Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) HVAC system ever implemented in Egypt. The project supports the country’s flagship 660km High-Speed Rail (HSR), connecting key centers — Ain Sokhna, Alamein, Cairo, Alexandria, and 6th of October City — and revolutionizing rail transit across 21 stations.

A Cooling Solution of Unprecedented Scale

Over 3,000 high-efficiency VRF units, manufactured at Hitachi’s Barcelona facility, will deliver a combined cooling capacity exceeding 11,000 Refrigeration Tons (RT). These Eurovent-certified systems are designed to withstand Egypt’s high ambient temperatures and rigorous transport environment.

Operational Leadership by Elsewedy Machinery

Elsewedy Machinery, the trading subsidiary of Elsewedy Electric Group, will oversee full HVAC implementation — covering supply, installation, copper piping, startup, commissioning, and after-sales support. This collaboration marries European HVAC engineering with local execution capacity.

A Strategic Leap for Egypt’s Rail Infrastructure

Once operational, Egypt’s high-speed rail will accommodate over 1 million passengers and move 8,500 tons of cargo daily, cutting travel times and significantly boosting logistics efficiency and regional connectivity.

Executive Insight

“This megaproject represents a pivotal advancement in Egypt’s infrastructure agenda,” stated Ahmed Aqel, General Manager of Johnson Controls–Hitachi MEA. “We are proud to deliver advanced HVAC systems at this scale, ensuring technical precision, operational excellence, and long-term impact.”

Egypt Sets a New Standard in Sustainable Transport

The deal reflects Egypt’s commitment to modern, climate-resilient infrastructure and underscores the role of global-local partnerships in delivering large-scale transport solutions.
