Ideal Heating, a leading name in the UK’s heating industry, has marked a significant milestone with the opening of a new, purpose-built training centre in Dalgety Bay, near Edinburgh. This £250,000 investment is not only Ideal’s first dedicated training facility in Scotland but also a strategic move to support the nation’s transition to low-carbon heating solutions by reskilling installers for the future of home heating.
The Dalgety Bay centre, part of Ideal’s Expert Academy network, is designed to deliver industry-leading training for up to 2,000 installers annually. While traditional boiler courses remain a core offering, the facility’s standout feature is its comprehensive heat pump training program. Installers can now gain hands-on experience with the latest rigs and simulators, learning both the fundamentals and advanced aspects of heat pump system design, installation, and maintenance.
At the opening event, Nicola McLeod, Managing Director for the Scotland Division at Warmworks—the managing agent for the Scottish Government’s Warmer Homes Scotland scheme—hailed the centre as “an incredibly exciting milestone for Ideal.” She emphasized that the facility will give Warmworks’ supply chain and other organizations access to high-quality, practical training, advancing skills in heat pump technology and strengthening commitments to local communities.
Mark Derbyshire, Ideal Heating’s Managing Director (Domestic), highlighted the importance of a strong Scottish presence as the industry pivots toward low-carbon solutions. “Installers visiting our new centre in Dalgety Bay can not only access our high-quality range of training courses but also learn about heat pump system design and become familiar with our products,” Derbyshire said.
The centre’s location is a strategic advantage, with Glasgow, Dundee, and Perth all within a 50-mile radius, making it easily accessible to installers across central Scotland. The training is delivered by Expert Academy’s seasoned team, boasting a combined 300 years of industry experience, and is tailored to real-world scenarios that engineers will encounter in the field.
Ideal Heating’s commitment to upskilling the workforce is further reflected in its partnership with The Energy Training Academy in Dalkeith, where a dedicated training room offers additional opportunities for hands-on learning with both boilers and heat pumps. The company’s training pathway includes both in-person and online modules, ensuring that installers at all levels can access the knowledge and qualifications needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving market.
As the UK accelerates its push toward net zero, Ideal Heating’s new Scottish training centre stands as a beacon for the industry—empowering installers to embrace the heat pump revolution and deliver the next generation of sustainable home heating solutions.
