Efficiency in a Tight Spot: Daikin’s New Compact R Series Brings Rotary Recovery to Small Spaces

As urban densification forces building services into increasingly tighter mechanical closets, Daikin Europe N.V. has announced a major expansion of its ventilation portfolio with the launch of the Compact R series. This new addition brings high-efficiency rotary heat recovery to the “Compact” family, traditionally dominated by plate heat exchanger models (the L and T series), without expanding the unit’s physical footprint.

The Compact R is engineered specifically for light commercial applications offices, schools, and retail where floor space is at a premium but air quality and energy recovery cannot be compromised.

The Rotary Advantage: Sensible and Latent Recovery

The headline feature of the Compact R is its rotary heat recovery wheel, available in both condensation and sorption versions. While the existing Compact L (low-height) and Compact T (top-discharge) models utilize counter-flow plate heat exchangers to recover sensible heat, the new “R” model can recover latent heat (moisture) as well.

This is a critical advancement for indoor climate control. By recovering moisture from the e xhaust air in winter or rejecting it in humid summers, the unit significantly reduces the load on humidifiers and cooling coils. The result is a more stable indoor $RH$ (Relative Humidity) and a dramatic reduction in annual energy consumption.

Engineering for Retrofits: ‘Same Footprint, More Power’

One of the most impressive feats of the Compact R is its modularity. Covering seven sizes with airflow rates ranging from 500 to 6,00 m, the units are designed to pass through standard doorways easily.

  • Configuration Flexibility: The units offer side duct connections and can be configured in either right-hand or left-hand arrangements to suit existing piping and duct layouts.
  • Indoor/Outdoor Versatility: While configured for indoor installation by default, an optional outdoor kit (including a roof and specialized dampers) allows the Compact R to be placed on rooftops where internal space is non-existent.
  • Plug-and-Play Integration: The unit is fully compatible with the Daikin AHU-DX kit, allowing it to be paired with VRV R32 condensing units. This creates a unified “all-electric” heating and cooling system that eliminates the need for gas boilers.

Smart Air: IAQ and Remote Monitoring

In line with the industry’s move toward “Healthy Buildings,” the Compact R comes equipped with Daikin’s latest Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) sensors. These sensors monitor CO_2, VOCs, and fine particulate matter (PM_2.5), allowing the unit to operate in Demand Controlled Ventilation (DCV) mode. In this mode, fan speeds adjust automatically based on real-time occupancy and air quality, ensuring energy isn’t wasted on ventilating empty rooms.

Furthermore, the series is natively compatible with the Daikin on Site (DoS) cloud platform. This allows facility managers to monitor performance 24/7, receive predictive maintenance alerts, and fine-tune energy settings remotely a feature previously reserved for much larger, bespoke “Professional” AHU ranges.

The Bottom Line

With Eurovent certification and compliance with the VDI 6022 hygienic standard, the Compact R bridges the gap between simple ventilation and complex, custom-engineered air handling. For consultants and contractors, it provides a “stock-ready” solution that meets the highest efficiency standards without the lead times of a custom build.
