Carrier plans ₹1,000‑crore green AC plant in Sri City, boosting India’s Cooling City

Carrier Air Conditioning & Refrigeration is set to build a new state‑of‑the‑art air‑conditioning manufacturing plant in Andhra Pradesh’s Sri City, marking a ₹1,000‑crore (about US$110 million) bet on India as a global hub for sustainable cooling solutions. The facility, to be developed on a 39‑acre plot inside the integrated business city, will focus on energy‑efficient commercial and industrial HVAC systems and is expected to generate around 1,000 direct jobs and 2,000 indirect employment opportunities once fully operational.

The project moves Carrier from initial site visit to land handover and formal agreement in just eight months, underlining both the company’s urgency to ramp up capacity and Andhra Pradesh’s pitch as a fast‑execution manufacturing destination amid competition from neighbouring Tamil Nadu.

New plant cements Sri City as India’s AC manufacturing hotspot

Sri City, on the Andhra–Tamil Nadu border, has quietly become one of India’s most important manufacturing clusters for cooling equipment, accounting for nearly 40 per cent of the country’s air‑conditioner output today and targeting a significantly higher share by 2028. Carrier’s decision to anchor a large new plant in the industrial zone gives the region what local officials are calling a “legacy stamp” from one of the world’s oldest air‑conditioning brands.

Carrier India signed a long‑term lease deed with Sri City to develop the greenfield facility, with the documents exchanged between Carrier India Managing Director Sundaresan Narayanan and Sri City Managing Director Ravindra Sannareddy in the presence of Tirupati District Collector Dr S. Venkateswar. The plant will complement Carrier’s existing facility in Haryana and is framed as a key pillar of the company’s long‑term growth strategy in the Indian market.

State officials say the swift progression from exploratory discussions to signed lease and land allocation is a showcase of Andhra Pradesh’s “speed of delivery” and investor‑friendly governance. Sources quoted in local reports note that Tamil Nadu was also in the frame with its own incentives, but Andhra Pradesh ultimately secured the project by highlighting industrial policy support, infrastructure readiness and fast‑track clearances.

Focus on sustainable, energy‑efficient cooling

Carrier’s Sri City plant will be dedicated to sustainable and energy‑efficient air‑conditioning solutions, rather than low‑end mass‑market room ACs. The facility is expected to manufacture commercial and industrial AC and HVAC systems aimed at high‑performance buildings, data centres, industrial facilities and large infrastructure projects in India and abroad.

Company statements emphasise:

  • Integration of green manufacturing practices, including resource‑efficient processes and lower‑carbon operations.
  • A product portfolio centred on high‑efficiency, climate‑friendly systems aligned with India’s growing regulatory and corporate focus on sustainability.
  • The ability to manufacture at scale to serve both domestic demand and export markets, strengthening India’s position in Carrier’s global supply chain.

“This 39‑acre facility at Sri City will create over 3,000 jobs and position Andhra Pradesh as a leading air‑conditioning manufacturing hub,” Narayanan said, adding that the plant will cater to rising demand for sustainable cooling while creating meaningful opportunities for local talent.

Jobs and local ecosystem impact

Between direct plant roles and supplier‑side opportunities, the Sri City project is projected to support more than 3,000 jobs, including engineers, technicians, assembly workers, logistics staff and service providers. Officials say the focus will be on hiring and upskilling local youth, with Carrier expected to introduce advanced manufacturing practices and technical training in the region.

For Sri City, which already hosts several global HVAC and appliance brands, the Carrier investment deepens its cluster effect by attracting suppliers, component makers and service firms tied to high‑efficiency cooling technology. Sannareddy described the project as a “strong endorsement” of the industrial city’s ecosystem and infrastructure, from port connectivity to plug‑and‑play facilities.

Strategic timing amid booming AC demand

Industry forecasts show India’s air‑conditioning market expanding rapidly on the back of urbanisation, rising incomes, heat‑stress concerns and government pushes for energy‑efficient infrastructure. Sri City’s emergence as a “Cooling City” dovetails with New Delhi’s ambitions to build domestic capacity in climate‑smart manufacturing and reduce reliance on imported high‑tech HVAC systems.

Carrier’s new plant is expected to:

  • Shorten lead times and reduce import dependence for advanced commercial HVAC systems.
  • Help customers meet India’s tighter energy‑performance norms and net‑zero commitments.
  • Support Carrier’s export strategy into the wider Asia–Pacific, Middle East and African markets.

As land development and construction move ahead, Andhra Pradesh officials are pitching the project as both an economic milestone and a climate‑era industrial story: a global cooling major choosing India’s east coast not just for low‑cost capacity, but as a base for next‑generation, green air‑conditioning manufacturing.
