ASHRAE Issues New Guidance to Protect Indoor Air Quality During Wildfires

With wildfires and prescribed burns becoming increasingly common worldwide, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) has published a new resource aimed at safeguarding indoor air quality (IAQ) during these events.

Protecting Building Occupants from Smoke Hazards:

ASHRAE Guideline 44-2024, titled “Protecting Building Occupants From Smoke During Wildfire and Prescribed Burn Events,” outlines best practices for building design, operation, and maintenance to reduce health risks associated with prolonged exposure to wildfire smoke.

A Growing Threat:

The urgency for this guideline stems from the alarming rise in wildfire frequency and intensity. ASHRAE President M. Dennis Knight emphasizes the critical nature of this resource:

“The frequency, intensity and duration of wildland fire events have grown significantly in recent years, threatening air quality and public health. This guideline equips building professionals with comprehensive recommendations to mitigate smoke intrusion and maintain healthier indoor environments. Protecting building occupants from the harmful effects of wildfire smoke is critical to preserving their health and overall wellbeing.”

Key Components of the Guideline:

ASHRAE Guideline 44-24 offers a comprehensive framework:

  • Building Design: Recommendations for building design and construction practices that minimize smoke infiltration, such as tighter building envelopes and proper ventilation system design.
  • Operation and Maintenance: Strategies for operating and maintaining HVAC systems during smoke events, including increased filtration and air change rates.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Guidance on developing emergency response plans for smoke events, including communication protocols with occupants and activation of air filtration systems.
  • Post-Event Procedures: Protocols for assessing and restoring indoor air quality after smoke events, involving air flushing and verification of safe air quality levels.

Empowering Building Professionals:

By providing a comprehensive framework, ASHRAE Guideline 44-2024 empowers architects, engineers, and facility managers to:

  • Implement Effective Strategies: They can implement effective strategies to mitigate smoke intrusion and ensure healthier indoor environments during wildfire events.
  • Protect Building Occupants: This ultimately leads to improved health and well-being for building occupants exposed to wildfire smoke.

Looking Ahead:

The release of ASHRAE Guideline 44-2024 signifies a significant step forward in addressing the challenges posed by smoke from wildfires and prescribed burns. By promoting best practices for building design, operation, and maintenance, this resource helps create safer and healthier indoor environments in a world increasingly affected by wildfires.
