Borussia Dortmund Unveils 4.2 MW Solar Power System at Signal Iduna Park, Setting New Sustainability Benchmark

Borussia Dortmund plans 4.2 MW PV system at soccer stadium

Borussia Dortmund, a leading Bundesliga football club, has announced a groundbreaking initiative to install a 4.2 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) system on the roof of its iconic Signal Iduna Park stadium. Partnering with Chinese PV module manufacturer JA Solar and German energy giant RWE, the project will feature 11,000 high-efficiency solar panels and a 3.4 MWh battery storage system, positioning it as the world’s largest stadium solar roof installation upon completion in late summer 2025.

Project Specifications and Environmental Impact

The system will generate over 4 GWh of electricity annually—enough to power the stadium’s floodlights for 1,000 matches per year and cover the energy needs of all Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and UEFA Champions League home games. Excess electricity will be fed into the grid via RWE, generating additional revenue for the club. Key environmental benefits include:

This builds on the club’s existing 1 MW solar array installed in 2012, which will remain operational alongside the new project.

Partnerships and Technology

JA Solar’s Full-Black modules, chosen for their sleek design and efficiency, will adorn the stadium roof. These panels not only match Borussia Dortmund’s iconic black-and-yellow branding but also demonstrate commercial viability for large-scale installations. RWE will manage grid integration and surplus energy distribution.

Carsten Cramer, Managing Director of Borussia Dortmund, emphasized the collaboration’s significance: “With JA Solar’s modules powering the largest PV system on any stadium roof, we’re setting the course for a greener future.”
Henning Schulze, JA Solar Vice President, added: “This project underscores our commitment to decarbonization and long-term presence in Europe.”

Global Context and Industry Leadership

The project surpasses Turkey’s 4.2 MW solar roof at Galatasaray’s stadium (2022) and Germany’s 2.4 MW system at SC Freiburg’s Europa-Park Stadium. It also coincides with a UEFA-SolarPower Europe partnership to promote solar adoption across European football.

Financial and Operational Benefits

Broader Implications for Sports Sustainability

Borussia Dortmund’s initiative sets a precedent for stadiums worldwide, proving that renewable energy integration is both economically and environmentally viable. As Hans-Joachim Watzke, BVB Chairman, noted: “This partnership with RWE advances our vision for innovative, sustainable solutions in sports.”

With installation set to begin in summer 2025, Signal Iduna Park is poised to become a global symbol of how athletic venues can lead the charge in the clean energy transition.
